MALDIVES

The Maldives Islands lie Southwest of India. Scattered across the equator in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the gem-like islands of the Maldives depict the rare vision of a tropical paradise. Palm fringed islands with sparkling white beaches, turquoise lagoons, clear warm waters and coral reefs teeming with abundant varieties of marine flora and fauna, fascinates visitors as it has for thousands of years.

There are three distinctly different types of diving: inside the atolls, outside the atolls and inside the channels or passes, which is where the currents are strongest and you'll find the greatest congregation of fish life. Most intriguing are the cleaning stations, found around every corner and under every ledge. Groupers, Snappers, Surgeonfish, Eels, Parrotfish, even Giant Napoleon Wrasse park casually in corners, oblivious to all, (including cameras) while armies of wrasse, shrimp and other assorted cleaners pick at debris in their open gills and cavernous mouths.

The big attraction, however, are the schools of fish that patrol the reefs in colorful packs: Humpback and Black and White Snappers, Trevally Jacks, Barracuda, Batfish, Unicornfish, Yellowback Fusiliers and Harlequin Sweetlips almost comical in design. The reef's larger inhabitants, including sharks, rays and occasionally even Whale Sharks, are often seen cruising in the blue.

Every Sunday evening, the luxurious Maldives Aggressor III leaves the lagoon in Male for a week of hassle-free diving to North Male, South Male, Felidoo Atolls or Ari Atoll.

Diving begins Monday morning and ends Saturday afternoon when the Aggressor returns to port. Monday through Friday there are 3 - 4 dives offered each day and night diving most nights.  Saturday a half-day of diving is offered. The dive schedule is dependent on tides, currents and prevailing weather conditions.

MALDIVES DIVE SITES

MALDIVES DIVE SITE INFORMATION

Top Dive Sites of North Male Atoll

Lankan Manta Point

During  the southwest season, an astonishing number of Manta Rays can be seen while being cleaned. The top of the reef at 40 ft., is covered with coral that are home to hugh colonies of cleaner fish, then it and gently slopes down to 130 ft.

The Manta Rays come in from the deep water and hover over the coral heads while the wrasse are set to work to clean them. To ensure the best view  you need to be patient and position yourself close to, but not on top of  the coral heads. There,  they will perform their cleaning ritual in front of your very eyes. It is common for encounters to last half an hour or more but if you try to reach out and touch the mantas you will scare them away. This beautiful dive site also has huge schools of Fusiliers, Oriental Sweetlips and Napoleon Wrasse, turtles and various species of Moray Eels.

Banana Reef

Shaped like a banana, this reef stretches from North-East towards the South over a 1000 ft. area. Ever since scuba divers first began to dive this part of the North-Male' Atoll more than twenty years ago, Banana Reef has remained an ideal spot. A favorable feature on this site is since the fish show absolutely no fear for photographers, a diver can take excellent photographs.

Maldives Victory (Ship Wreck)

The "Maldives Victory" is a 330 ft long cargo ship that sank in February 1981. The dive takes you 40 ft down along  a rope to the ship's main deck where you will be sheltered from strong currents. Here you will be amazed by the colorful marine life that is now calling the Maldives Victory home. From large groupers and tunas to giant Trevallies and schools of Fusiliers. Come face to face with turtles guarding the bow of the ship and its stunning corals or step back in time and explore the ships former accommodation quarters and bridge. On your ascent you will have a majestic bird's eye view of this beautiful vessel.

Top Dive Sites of South Male Atoll

Embudhoo Kandu

The dive site Embudhoo Thila is a spectacular underwater reef located on the north corner of the Embudhoo Kandu. The reef top ranges between 40 ft – 50 ft . There is a lavish decoration of hard and soft coral upon the reef plateau. On the south side of the Thila you will find a protruding ledge alongside a small cave. It is here that reef fish congregate in large numbers, whereas around the outskirts it is not uncommon to find sharks patrolling the waters.

Kandooma Thila

Shaped like a teardrop, Kandooma Thila is one of the most spectacular dive sites in the South Male Atoll, for scenery as well as for prolific fish life. Subject to strong currents, a quick descend is necessary at Kandooma Thila. The dive begins at the upcurrent and dive-guides usually set the jumping point a few meters away from the reef.

Guraidhoo Kandu

This top dive site in the Maldives guarantees a unique diving opportunity for viewing a wide range of marine life and stunning natural marine scapes. On the south side of Guraidhoo Kandu is the Guraidhoo Corner, a famous dive site popular for its abundant fish life and coral growth. The outside reef is full of grouper, schooling Banerfish and turtles, which usually inhabit the same area of the reef. Near the corner you will see big schools of Fusilier, Rainbow Runner, tuna and Trevally, while on the corner point at 75  ft, grey reef sharks and snapper prey on the smaller fish. A large tame Napoleon Wrasse has become a local celebrity on both sides of the channel, and is always quick to track down divers.

Top Dive Sites of South Ari Atoll

Kudarah Thila

The topography here is quite complex. The Thila is divided into four large coral heads of varying sizes. They are located on a plateau rising from 130 ft to about 40 ft. The Thila is no more than 250 feet in diameter and you can swim around the whole site in a single dive. Each of the blocks is undercut from 50 ft to 80 ft with superb caves jammed full of soft corals, gorgonians and whip corals.

On the southwest corner is an archway swim-through and between all four pinnacles are deep ravines that harbor a stunning amount of marine life. The centre of the Thila is hollowed out, with a base at 65 ft and thousands of Blue-lined Snapper schools in the gullies that have been created. Watch out for yellow Trumpet Fish shadowing the snappers while hunting on the reef. Grey and White Tip Sharks can be seen on the current points. This is a protected marine area.

Broken Rock

Apart from Kudarah Thila, Broken Rock is most probably the most well-known dive site in the South Ari Atoll. This Thila is literally a broken rock with a 6 ft wide canyon that splits the small Thila in two parts from west to east, giving the reef its name. This canyon is the main attraction at this wonderful submerged reef.

Broken Rock is covered in soft corals and only one diver can enter the canyon at a time.  On the north side, at a depth of around 75 ft – 100 ft, there are two big coral blocks with overhangs and beautiful fan corals which are well worth a visit.

The top reef at Broken Rock has great hard coral growth and is an ideal place to find invertebrates like leaf fish and nudibranchs.

Rangali Madivaru (Manta Point)

'Madi' means ray in Dhivehi. During the northeast monsoon, this is a superb Manta Ray cleaning station. As with many good manta points, the reef slopes down gently from the top at 25 ft to the atoll floor at 100 ft. Although there are many cleaning stations along this ½ mile reef, the area where the mantas are most active is midway along the northern side.

A deep basin, almost 250 ft across has formed in the coral, and the currents flow out of the atoll. This attracts the mantas, which hover like giant spaceships in the current. To the east of the basin, the reef forms a wall which drops steeply down to the sand floor at 100 ft. At a depth of 80 ft there is a large cave running along the reef for a distance of 600 ft.

Maaya Thila

A protected marine area, Maaya Thila offers one of the best-known dives in the Maldives. There is a remarkable variety of marine life on the Thila including grey Reef Sharks, White Tip Sharks, turtles, Stonefish, Frogfish, Zebra Moray Eels, Batfish and manymore species. The Thila is small enough – 100 ft in diameter – that you can easily swim around it in a single dive, but as always, it is the point of the current that concentrates the underwater activity.

Descending onto the top of the Thila at 25 ft and swimming due north, you will find yourself at the edge of the Thila, where there is a large coral overhang full of bright orange Tubastrea corals. Looking out into the blue, you will see a satellite rock which is worth exploring. The top of the rock, at 50 ft  is covered in colorful soft corals. The vertical sides of the rock drop down to the atoll plate at 130 ft. In the channel between the satellite rock and the Thila, Grey Reef Sharks often patrol and we have seen Guitar Sharks here on a number of occasions.

Fish Head (Mushi Mas Mingili Thila)

The marine life is absolutely astonishing at Fish Head, starting with the schools of Fusilier and giant Trevally glittering around the surface. Deeper down, a diver will find  Barracudas and Napoleon Wrasse. One particular Wrasse measures more than 5ft in length. There are numerous types of pelagics at this dive site as well as beautiful underwater landscapes. One famous feature in deeper waters being the straight wall on the northern side, where sea fans sprout from the reef edge in great numbers.

Maalhos Thila

Maalhos Thila is for experienced divers.  The best part of this dive site is located at a depth of 85 ft or deeper. It is possible to dive at Maalhos Thila during incoming and outgoing current.  The main attractions at Maalhos Thila are the coral heads found about 90 ft below the surface.

There are three large coral heads and these are covered with amazingly colored soft coral. Close to the coral heads, you will see Giant Sweet Lips and at the bottom of the channel is a resting ground for White Tip Reef Sharks. The caves and overhangs at Maalhos Thila dive site are filled with blue colored soft coral and an extra cloud of yellow brought by the Blue Striped Snappers.
